Shaking Tree Memories

Shaking Tree Memories is an interactive installation that transforms a tree stump into a resonant storyteller. Using contact speakers and a custom Pure Data sketch, the installation plays audio recordings that capture the moments of tree cuttings driven by deforestation, primarily to clear land for agricultural practices.
Participants are invited to engage physically and emotionally by standing on the stump, where they can hear and feel the vibrations of these sounds. By modulating the frequency and intensity of the field recordings according to different future planetary diets and therefore deforestation scenarios, the installation highlights the impact human actions/daily decisions have on the pace of tree loss.

To extend the project beyond the physical installation, we are creating a short film that captures the experience, coupled with the fundamental statistics and actionable steps to mitigate deforestation. By addressing practical changes—such as adopting sustainable agricultural practices or reducing meat consumption—we aim to empower the audience to take meaningful steps toward a future within the planetary safe zone.
