IAD Research Presented at ICCHP 2026

IAD lecturer Luke Franzke presented his research at the International Conference on Computers Helping People with Special Needs (ICCHP) in July. Conducted in collaboration with Gerhard Nussbaum (ki-i.at) and Martin Kaltenbrunner (Tangible Music Lab, Linz), the project explores the role of the mouth in expressive electronic music-making for people with motor disabilities.

The research investigated alternative forms of mouth-based musical instruments through a participatory workshop co-led by Gerhard Nussbaum, drawing on his lived experience with tetraplegia and expertise in accessible technology. Using a modular toolkit of electronic input and feedback modalities, the project demonstrates new possibilities for accessible and embodied forms of digital music-making.

The work contributes to ongoing research in inclusive design and accessible creative technologies, highlighting how alternative forms of interaction can expand opportunities for musical expression and participation when approached through participatory design, and is published in the book series Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS, volume 16867).
