Interaction Design Education Summit

Designing Undefined Perspectives

The Education Summit at the ZHdK with the theme "Designing Undefined Perspectives" marks the start of the big Interaction Design Conference Interaction23.

For two days, the Summit will explore the impact of the constantly changing discipline of interaction design on education. Keynotes and presentations by industry leaders, interdisciplinary workshops and panel discussions on the future of the discipline are part of the multifaceted programme.

The opening keynote by Ron Wakkary «Designing for More than Human-Centred Worlds» and the closing keynote by René Spitz «Designing Design Education» form the highlight of the Summit.
Also of note are the recent publications by Ron Wakkary, «Things We Could Design» and Benedikt Groß, «Zukünfte gestalten».

Interaction design is in a state of constant and rapid transition. This may be due to the relatively young discipline, whose origins in principle go back only thirty years, or to working with rapidly evolving materials and ever new technical possibilities and challenges. Until now, the discipline has largely focused on the design of interfaces between people and devices and their experience and meaning. Now, however, the discipline is increasingly developing toward designing with hybrid physical and digital materials, the emergence of an increasingly complex and fluid ecology of digital services and hardware platforms, and the an abundance of autonomous and semi-autonomous systems that change their behavior over time. How will this change our discipline and its educational potential?

As part of Interaction Design Week 2023, we want to bring together educators, learners, practitioners, and businesses at the Education Summit to listen to inspiring talks, participate in hands-on workshops, and debate in panel discussions about the potential developments in and possible futures for our discipline. In short, we want two days full of ideas and inspiration.

The Summit is a great platform to share your ideas, thoughts, experiments and methods with a wide audience of people engaged in teaching, learning, and practicing interaction design. It is also an opportunity to make new contacts and get to know a new place, if you don't know it yet: the Zurich University of the Arts, one of the leading academies of the arts in Europe.

From the IAD Team, Prof. Jürgen Späth (Chair Education Summit) and Nadine Cocina (Summit Planning) are an integral part of the organising team and are shaping this year's edition of the Education Summit. Further on the team are Isabela Gygax (Summit Planning), Brenda Sanderson (IxDA Executive Director), Andréa Pellegrino (Sponsorship) and Carrie Rice (IxDA Conference Planner).

We look forward to welcoming you, to sharing ideas, being inspired and outlining new futures and possibilities for the discipline during this thought-provoking weekend.
