Die Forschungsschwerpunkte der Fachrichtung Interaction Design bilden sich aus den Forschungs-Clustern "Enivronment", “Health”, “Embodiment” und “Immersion”. Dozierende und wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter, aber auch BA- und MA-Studierende entwickeln in diesen Bereichen vielfältige Forschungsperspektiven mit interdisziplinären Kooperationspartnern. Die Fachrichtung unterhält ein Physical Computing Lab und entwickelt momentan ein Materialforschungs-Archiv.
