Lecture || James Bern and Maria Smigielska: Robotics || October 2019

In the context of this year's Physical Computing Module James Bern and Maria Smigielska presented their work to IAD students. Participants learned about the thematic area of robotics for post-industrial manufacturing and performative processes, as well as the computational aspects of robotic movement.

Robotics Lecture 1: James Bern, 23.10.19 at 13:30 (5.T09)
James Bern is a PHD researcher at ETH Computation Robotics Lab. His research focuses on design, modelling and control of soft robotic systems, together with the interactions such systems enable.

Robotics Lecture 2: Maria Smigielska 25.10.19 at 16:30 (5.T04)
Maria Smigielska is an architect, researcher and educator based in Zurich, Switzerland, working across architecture, arts and technology. Educated as an architect in Poland (PUT Poznan 2009) and Switzerland (CAAD ETH Zurich 2013). Between digital and physical realms, she focuses on computational design, machine learning for material knowledge encapsulation (f.ex. robotic rod bending – bendilicious.com), as well as robotic procedures for post-industrial fabrication and performative processes. Recent exhibitions: Tallinn Architecture Biennale 2017, Art[n+1] Paris 2017; Ars Electronica Linz 2018; Tetem 2018; Kulturfolger 2018, Design Festival Bern 2019 CH. Maria is currently a researcher at University for Arts and Design FHNW, Basel and runs her design practice in Zurich.
