Michael Leung: To Become Rooted

— Michael Leung
«To Become Rooted: Anti-Extractive Research Approaches within Emancipatory Farming Communities»
Introduction: Karmen Franinović | Moderation: Duy Bui

The lecture shares research approaches and encounters that have brought Michael towards writing a thesis novel for his PhD doctorate outcome. The concept of the simultaneous movement, relating to global land resistances and unconventional academic outputs, will be illustrated alongside anti-extractive research approaches, multispecies thinking, and nuances within local struggles that are often unreported. Aspects of participatory action research and radical publishing (from others too) will be shown, in what intends to be an accessible and convivial lecture–with storytelling, dialogue and critical reflection. Materials will be added in the run-up to the lecture here: www.studioleung.com/interfacingecologies

Michael is an artist/designer, researcher and part-time lecturer. He is from London and moved to Hong Kong in 2009 to complete a Master of Design at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He lectures and facilitates social practice at Hong Kong Baptist University. Michael’s research takes him to different autonomous spaces—some of which he shares with students, in zines, and with(in) different social movements.
