Design the Undefined, Undesign the Defined
25 – 03 March 2023, Kongresshaus, Zurich, Schweiz
Interaction23 conference brought together designers, thinkers, and innovators from around the world to Zurich, Switzerland, for a transformative exchange on the future of interaction design. It was the largest conference of its kind in Switzerland, inviting participants to rethink how design can address broader ecologies and societal impact, emphasizing ethical and sustainable approaches to technology.
The conference was co-chaired by IAD's Karmen Franinović, together with Thomas Link from Merkle, and supported by an international team. Franinovic was reponsable for keynotes and centeral themes that included the role of artificial intelligence, the environmental impact of interactions, and the shift from human-centric to planet-centric design. Workshops and off-site events provided hands-on explorations of AI’s potential to augment creativity, the integration of diverse knowledge systems, and design’s role in public health and social initiatives. Discussions underscored the importance of designing not only what we create but how we create responsibly.
Interaction23 served as a space for critical reflection and collaboration, encouraging designers to challenge conventions and broaden their perspectives. By addressing contemporary challenges and offering a vision for the future, the conference highlighted the need for a balance between human needs, technological innovation, and planetary wellbeing.
